Success is boring and created in silent routines and anonymity

Hitting a weight loss or sales goal is a lagging indicator.

What I mean is that when you step on that scale or reach the end of the quarter or you're standing at the pearly gates, you are greeted with evidence of what you did or did not do for the days/weeks/decades leading up to that point.

Did you choose water or unsweetened tea over a soda for every meal for 90 days?

Did you dial the phone 20-30-100 times a day, every day of the quarter?

Did you follow in the footsteps of Jesus?

None of those things are exciting or newsworthy or particularly interesting...but they're necessary.

"But Wes, I've always been out of shape/overweight. I've tried a thousand diets. Nothing ever works."

"But Wes, sales/business is tough for me. It's filled with high highs and low lows. It's such a roller coaster. And technology is hard to keep up with and people are so hard to reach and ads are so expensive."

"But Wes, God knows my heart. Besides, I’m spiritual, not religious…and the NFL Sunday Ticket is expensive. I gotta stay home to get my money’s worth!”

Save your breath.
Quit your whining.
Get to work building something great, which usually takes time, i.e.,...

The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, began in 1882 and is set to open in 2026.

The Cologne, Germany Cathedral (1248~1880) took 632 years.

The St. Vitus Cathedral (1344~1929) in Prague, also took around six centuries to build (585 years).

I know a lot of self-help goo-roos tell you to state your goals as if they have already happened, i.e.,

  • "I weigh the same as I did in high school."
  • "I have the same waistline as I did in my 20s."
  • "I make money hand over fist."
  • "I am saved."

That has never resonated with me, probably because it's a lie.

So try this:

  • "I take my health and fitness seriously. I eat well and exercise six days a week, regardless of how I feel."
  • "I take my job seriously. I show up early, focus, and do whatever it takes each day to move my business forward."
  • "I love the Lord. I practice my faith daily and lead by example."

Everything is sweeter and more enjoyable and more appreciated when you have to work for it.

So get to work.

It's a noisy, hurting, chaotic world out there. Bring them in for some quiet time, a word of encouragement, and fellowship.

Market like you mean it.
Now go sell something.
