MLAM 005: Try This Bold Marketing Idea...Be Human

Tools To Thrive

You just can't make this stuff up.

For the last many months I've been on a TrueTwit rampage. What a rude, offensive service.

If you're not familiar with it, Twitter users sign up for this service that sends an email to their new followers such as those below that include a link that the follower must click on and enter a Captcha Code to prove they are not a robot.

The problem with this service far outweighs the benefits, namely:

  • It's rude as hell. It's the equivalent of meeting someone at a conference or a party and that person saying "It's so nice to meet you. I'm a fan of your work," and you reply with "HOLD ON ONE MINUTE! Show my assitant your driver's license and give her your thumb print before we can interact."
  • It NEVER SHUTS OFF until you follow the link and verify yourself. As you can see below, this person had the TrueTwit service email me on Dec 26, Jan 6 and last night. So ignoring it won't help. Your inbox will get these messages for all eternity until you verify.
TrueTwit Is The Devil
Last week I had to confirm that I wanted to switch my insurance. Today I had to type in "GOOD FOR NOTHING." How ironic is that? I think thisTrueTwit stuff is "good for nothing," and now I have the proof.

I took these images and shared them with the offender who has a nice profile and following on Twitter. (She has yet to respond.)

Below you can see the email blast I got from someone on Twitter and my reply to him. (He is yet to respond, as well.)

LinkedIn Spam Example
Look, there is no shortcut to growing a business because, at the end of the day, you must remember the Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. And those "others" are other human beings, just like you.

Don't assume they are robots. Don't assume they are jerks. Don't assume they are idiots. Assume they are humans with needs and fears and hopes and pains and goals and desires and they are looking to you for help.

Might that take longer to build? Yes.
Might that require more effort on your part? Yes.
Might that help you build raving fans that appreciate the human approach? You can bet your ass it will.

Like all things in life, what goes around, comes around, and what's old is new, and what's old is personalizing and humanizing your sales and marketing, so it's now new.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
